Long dogs really don’t do small stepping stones – as my dachshund could confirm.
You need your arms for balance on most stepping stones though – try to carry a dog over toy size and you’d likely both end up wet.

My wife has occasionally in the last 26 years ragged me about convincing her to walk across the Mississippi on the rocks at Lake Itasca on our honeymoon. I was more successful doing so at 4 or 5 than she was at 31.
