Let’s put it into perspective. Game 6, Red Sox up 3 games to 2. Bottom of the tenth (yes, tenth), two out, nobody on base, Red Sox up 4-2, and one strike on Gary Carter. By the time Buckner made his error there had been three hits and a wild pitch to tie the game. More than one batter had gotten to two strikes.

The team as a whole had thrown the lead away long before the ball got by Buckner, and then, also as a team, didn’t show up for game 7. Blaming the series on one error, after a secure lead had already been blown, has always been ridiculous.

Hey Keith, do you remember how the Sox got to the series in ’86? They were down 3-1 in the ALCS facing elimination in Anaheim in the 9th inning of game 5, when the Angels bullpen collapsed and a guy named Donnie Moore gave up the go ahead run to Dave Henderson, and then the Angels lost the game in extra innings? Then they lost games 6 & 7 and the Angels fans unfairly blamed Donnie Moore for the collapse when game 5 was the last time he appeared for them ever. Turns out Donnie Moore had a bad back and it affected his pitching shoulder. He was basically gutting it out for the team. He ended up being released the following year and we know what happened after. So can you guys give Bill Buckner a break finally?

Yeah…it was fun to watch from the stands, especially after listening to the chant of “Darryl! Darryl!” from the Sux fans. The error may have only contributed to the Sux downfall but as far as the Mets fans in the stands were concerned, it was pivotal.
