We never did more than just lights on the tree, but I can remember spending half the day just getting things untangled and the trying to locate the bad bulb(s). Dad considered those tasks “kid’s work”.
I’ve never heard that. I think it’s just trends or personal taste. I prefer white lights on the tree and inside, and colored lights outside. More fun that way.
We try to tell people – put your lights up in October or even September when it’s a nice warm day. You don’t have to light ‘em, just put ’em up. Or be like John and wait for 10 below zero day when it’s snowing and the wind is blowing!
I agree with everyone though an old strip, makes John totally not smart. I prefer colored lights. To families who decorate their homes for attention, so glad we do not pay for electric bill.
I have zero patience with people who, first, have advanced education and not the common sense of a matchbook; and then, two, make their problem that of everyone around them by their nasty attitude. Coals to you, John.
What is bad is that he did test the strings and then thought he must have thrown out the bad string(with the loose connection) last year. After he got them up, he found out that the one with the loose connection was NOT thrown away, It is snowing like hell and the string is the highest one – just like last year.
The lights consume the same amount of current no matter what the color. The color is derived by tinting or painting the bulbs, not by electrical means.
This is why you always test it before putting it up.
I always test before putting up lights and believe me, I’ve got first-hand experience that doing this doesn’t always work! This past Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, this happened to us with one particular strand of lights on our Christmas tree. They worked when they went on and went out after they were strung up. After taking the non-working strand back off and testing every single bulb, my husband and I never DID find the problem! Needless to say, it then went in the garbage so that it wouldn’t be fooled with by either one of us ever again. Very frustrating and very strange!
I managed to save a couple strings from the old days. They are chaser lights and we just love them. So does my cats but, so far they haven’t bothered them.

When I was a kid, holiday lights were all in different, pretty colors.Nowadays, they’re all just white.BLAH!!
BLAH is right! All-white lights are just way too boring. Only the pretty, multi-color lights for me!!!!!

Uh, John? Wouldn’t it be easier to test before hanging the lights up …?
No? I stand corrected …

Always been a multi-color guy myself. Only time I’ve ever had “straight” white is on lighted garland.

Tis the season to be crabby if you’re trying to do too much or just get sloppy (i.e., not testing the lights first).

He knows there’s a string that doesn’t work, and he doesn’t plug it in before to test it?
