She probably starts out that way to soften the request. Some people ask and then complain about the answer. Don’t ask if you don’t want to help.

WAIT A MINUTE! Doing household business and caring for one’s children does not constitute Ellie being mean to John. John may work hard as a dentist may he’s not exactly digging coal. He’s not a visitor in his household although from his hangdog attitude you’d think he was a bratty fourteen-year-old.

He should have made a mad dash after the words, “No, not really,” and not let her catch her breath. The fool never learns!

That’s a pretty minor trip- only 1 kid, a couple errands, some grocery shopping. If I only had that to do, I’d be wondering if I should bother going out at all!

After some of the rotten things he’s said to her “You’ve been working out but you don’t look like you’ve lost any weight!” he owes her big time. This is the least he can do.

@Dogday88 I agree. It seems John was pretending to be nice to Ellie. Its rather hateful that when taken up on something he should normally do to take load off of her that he pouts about it.

I’m glad my dad enjoyed taking us (his 3 little girls) with him on errands. We loved singing with him going down the road and tagging along on errands. I’m glad he took the time to enjoy us. I can’t recall a time growing up that my mom got groceries. Dad always made a night of it with the kids and we often ended by going out for ice cream. Dad farmed and was a full time (60 hrs+) welder for an industrial chemical company so he came home tired but made time for us. Its sad to me that all dads aren’t like that. Some guys choose to be only fathers, not dads.

I love how excited Lizzie is. Small children can be exhausting, but when they’re expressing pure joy just at the sight of a beautiful day and the fun of being on an adventure with a parent, it definitely brightens a tedious round of errands.

Everyone is missing the line here that Elly is manipulative and says “Not really” and then loads him down with shopping and kid care. There is NOTHING here that says that John would object to the shopping trip if Elly had just been honest.

That is when he comes back with a big tom turkey and she screams at him that she only cooks hens. Been there, done that, bought the T shirt shirt and wore it out.

Elly forgot to add a few words: “Thank you, John”
