Janis: My phone has been acting up the past few weeks!
Janis: Oh, well, there's a new version out now, anyway!
Janis: I've always been lucky that way!
Arlo: She said, with no hint of irony!
Mine is 12 years old. Makes and takes calls like it was designed to do. Works great and I don’t need all that hoopla. I won’t buy into the latest upgrade every 6 months.
most iPhones and their ilk are used more for everything BUT talking. i think it will be funny if JJ waits 2 or 5 years before bringing back Gene any new readers of the strip will have No Idea who he is or where he came from. i am sure some new folks have no idea who this Gene character is even is now. he’s only been in one strip for over a year.
I recently read something on how planned obsolescence is titrated to correspond with the debut of new versions. Imagine that! I persuaded my husband to keep our landline because it doesn’t get all staticky like the cells.
If you get a cell-phone subsidized by your wireless carrier (i.e. with a 2-year contract), the phone generally starts acting up right around the time your contract is up for renewal. I don’t think that’s a coincidence.
Never had a phone go bad at the end of the 2 year contract. Kept my Centro for 4 years. Husband needed to upgrade for work to a smartphone and we had to leave that plan as any change would more than double the price. Pay less now for 2 separate pay as you go plans (he managed to find a new 4 yr old Centro for me for new plan).
We have kept our landline and spend much time arguing with Verizon to leave it as it is – copper wire. No electricity needed. Hurricane Sandy knocked out the cell towers and cell phones did not work. Trusty landline still worked despite the lack of electricity, so we were able to call and report same. It is well worth $27 a month to have a phone line that always works. We make calls on my cell (his has limited minutes) and give out our home number for others to call us.

My landline was working fine, except way too many robocalls. I had it disconnected, and haven’t had a single one since – works even better.

My cell phone is so old it has a rotary dial. (And when I say that to some young whipper-snappers, they don’t know what I mean.)

…it’s true…I am technologically backwards, yet I got rid of my landline a couple of years solely because of the cost redundancy – haven’t missed it.
