And just what are you going to do when you detect it – shovel it out?

With snow that deep a shovel won’t do you much good

Here in the Boston area (North Shore) it is good to put a shovel INSIDE the house next to a door that opens inwards. Ever try to push a Storm door against a wall of snow?

The blizzard of 1978 was a perfect example. Run the shovel into the top two inches and then try to throw it as far away as possible. Repeat. You can get out of the cellar a few feet at a time. Then you have to find your car under those drifts. A wooden broom works beautifully. Poke the wooden handle into the snow until you get a metal sound. Get the shovel and start a little path back to the cellar. Grab a beer and a sandwich and about an hour of sleep and then get the wife and kids outside to help!

Spend the next 3 days snowbound. Share your beer, cash and cigarettes with the neighbors. No ATM’s. Banks closed all week.

No plows could push away 3-4 foot drifts like that. But a tank could! Yup, a M60 tank without the gun comes down the hill that night with rubber tracks that chew up the asphalt just a bit. No need to wake up the wife. She is bouncing with you as the tank shakes the house. But a path was made and the street opened that next day for cars with good snow tires.

That’s how you deal with the snow and the shovel.
