I came down with the flu on Christmas Eve once. Had to cook for 12 people, and spent the rest of the evening on the couch. Nobody else got sick, so that was good. My husband offered to do the turkey, undercooked it and nuked it in the microwave. We had turkey jerky!.
Yesterday with me sick my husband made the lasagna and dessert I had planned. If I’d known ahead of time I’d be sick I’d have planned something simpler. He took a portion to the person we’d planned to have as a guest because she was all alone otherwise. I felt bad about not having her over but I wasn’t able to stand up to do all that cooking and was not up to entertaining at all. It may take time to really get the kitchen cleaned up when I’m better though.

She did already. They just know it wouldn’t be the same without her.

My family waited a month and a half until I returned from deployment in the Navy. They never told me they waited and it was a nice surprise.
