How long is John going to take getting rid of the headache he is about to receive ? Good shot, Elly ! He deserves it for that last remark ! That is basically what is wrong with we husbands—we don’t know when we have said enough !
It may be that Elly does not like her own body, but she is also showing her lack of trust in John. If she actually trusted him, she would have told her body that it might not be perfect, but her husband nevertheless likes her (and her body). Divorce is already appearing on the horizon, but first after a lot of hurting experiences.
Everybody’s always talking down Jon for his mouthy comments. But you know what? I’ll bet that’s why Elly married him. I’ll bet that’s what first attracted her to him.
Seems like Twiggy in the late 60’s was a poster child for anorexia. One thing my wife has noticed is that sizes on women’s clothing have been altered over the years…what was once an 8 is now a 5 and so on. My guess is that it’s to make the women wearing them feel better about themselves, which isn’t a bad marketing ploy. It’s cool…my wife was a size 1 even before they started “downsizing.”
All John really meant was that Elly had the misfortune of being born at a time and place in which the perfect female body is considered to be a size 0. That’s not a slam against Elly — it’s just a sad fact of life. Of course, he probably should have just told her that she was still as sexy to him as she was the day they were married, if not even more so!
If only comics were more like life – how many of us have longed to pitch a shoe or similar in response to a smart remark! Hurrah for Elly. And yes, sizes have changed a lot – I love vintage clothes, and in the 1940s, a size 16 was the equivalent of a 4/6 today. Even UK, US, and EU sizes vary widely. Personally, I hate the idea of a 0 – who wants to be a nothing?
I suppose Lynn and the rest of you are aware of a fairly well-drawn fake FBOFW in which the whole family at this stage goes skinny dipping. All of them look average, but accepting of their bodies.
For once, he’s right — we all were born in the wrong century if we are women and have a body larger than that of a 10 year old. It didn’t start in the 80s, it started a lot earlier than that. Who said “you can never be too thin or too rich”?

I’ve always thought that she just needs to improve her posture…chest out, shoulders back and stand tall.

She’s not fat enough for Rubens. But no one likes a bulgy belly on their own selves.

John can’t seem to give a compliment without adding an insult onto the end of it. It’s like a backhanded slap.

John does not find Ellie desirable. He has been in love with Ted for years. A few years later John comes out of the closet and moves in with Ted.

Rubens wouldn’t have looked twice at Elly, but it was pretty crass of her to throw her shoe at John … that should have been a ‘good’ answer!
