We fear the “evil” we mistakenly perceive the “powers that be” to be, then try to avoid responsibility in light of that fear. If only Sally could see that her teacher will likely be placated if she simply returns to school with the broken crayon, and continues to use said broken crayon in her colouring. No harm to “the system”, no harm to the child, child learns to trust the rational teacher, and to make do with serviceable equipment even if it’s not perfect.Over 50 years of Peanuts leads me to believe this is where Mr. Schulz is headed; elated Sally returns home to tell Charlie Brown of her experiences with her merciful teacher.

Oh for heaven’s sake! Go to the store and buy a box of crayons, take a whole crayon back to school and sneak it into the box when he’s not looking.
