The standard advice for digging out from an avalanche is to spit and dig the opposite way the spit goes… like if the spit goes in your eye, dig away from your eye.

Saw this scenario in Stargate SG-1 once. Just backup and keep activating the stargate. Let the energy surge do the rest. Or, you could just tell Hammy and RJ there are spuddies topside.
