Thatababy: All the new piggy-tail light bulbs makes me sad.
Thatababy: I mean, I already miss the old ones!
Thatababy: Think of all the poor kids who will never get the is-it-a-light bulb-or-fat-guy-pulling-up-his-pants-gag.
I’ll bet cartoonists will continue to use the old-fashioned kind to signify a bright idea for years to come. (I’m typing this in a room lit by the old-fashioned bulbs…..)
Maybe the old type light bulb did use a great deal of energy on heat, but at least they don’t have mercury in them like the CFL bulbs. These have to be deposited in a different way than the old bulbs. Can’t just throw them in the trash. Also, the CFLs bulbs don’t give as much light. Halogen bulbs give off too much heat and can be dangerous. LED bulbs give more light than the old bulbs and don’t give off as much heat as the halogen, but they cost a lot of money. Many people probably won’t be able to afford them. I think that if people would have learned to turn off lights when they’re not being used, all that energy wouldn’t be lost. Think of the number of buildings that leave lights on all night. Even if they are CFL (or whatever) they still use energy. Think of how much energy is wasted in Vegas and other places like that.
Ditto what Chickweed said—besides, banning incandescents doesn’t solve the issue of light pollution the way learning to turn off the extraneous lights does.

I never heard of that gag, but I can see it thanks to the third panel’s illustration.

I’ve never heard of the new light bulbs being referred to as piggy tails, either.
