    Daviddeer - I concur, but it should not just be limited to texting. It should be a general DWI or DWD - Driving While Impaired or Driving While Distracted - which would incorporate any activity (eating, applying makeup, reading, cell phone use, etc) that actively distracts the driver to the point where they become a hazard to other drivers, cyclists, or pedestrians.

    Of course, I also think that drivers should be tested on a regular basis - once every 10 years or so. This would help refresh driving skills and keep drivers up-to-date with driving laws and norms, and to get people off the roads when their age starts to affect their ability to drive safely.

    I know this would be unpopular and expensive to implement, but it would be interesting to compare the cost/payback of this idea with the cost/payback of other measures already implemented in the name of safety, for example with passenger screening at airports.

    some states already have “distracted driver” laws on their books. and more states should have them already in 2009 there have been at least 7 fatalities in western new york state involving texting
