I learned to drive in the 1960s on a reconditioned 3-quarter ton pickup with a sticky second gear that my cousin used as her primary errand-running vehicle. One morning, a week or so into my lessons, I was supposed to drive us (myself, my cousin, her four children, and our groceries) home from the supermarket, when I experience a major mis-coordination of clutch, shift, and accelerator, and bounced us in a series of bounds across the parking lot until I killed the engine. As I melted into a puddle of chagrin and embarrassment, I heard the kids in the truck bed shouting “Do it again! Do it again!”

Farm dogs seem more adept at it. Or they have more considerate drivers.

No pup of mine will ever ride in the bed of a pickup.
