Doing a search for Winnie Winkle. I found this video on YouTube. It’s titled “Trees To Tribune.” (1931) It spotlights several of the artists of popular comic strips. Unfortunately, Chester Gould is not shown. Because Dick Tracy did not appear until Oct., 1931. I don’t know how to post links. So you will have to cut and paste it.

Opal City is home to DC Comics’s STARMAN, who as it happens is also a nostalgia buff. Perhaps Nitrate really did do business there.

Next up on American Pickers, Mike and Frank talk to a real character, Silver Nitrate, about some great posters and other items in a vintage theater.

The in-jokes are more pesky than flies today! Metropolis, Opal City, Bernard “Barney” Fife—and all in the context of Silvery-smooth lies. How much of this is Tracy buying?BTW: Really, Winnie in that poster? It does not look like her to me, and I grew up on the Trib and its comics….

    Smoke on The Water!

    .

Sam was torn, feeling mighty lonelyKnowing that Silver’s words were baloneyYet the trail of smoke, and the lit cigarette,Gave Sam some remorse and a tinge of regret. For Sam was aware where his loyalty wasFighting the bad guys was always the causeYet if things had been different,Another time another dayHe and Silver would enjoy,Hanging out and smoking away!

    .

Thank you, Thank You,, THANK YOU!!! (you know who you are!)

Of course, Nitrate is lying to Tracy, but I don’t think he’s dumb enough to insult him or test him with the “Barney Fife” reference. My thought is that he was saying to Tracy, “Yes, I remember this guy from his picture. He tried to interest me in a rare film deal, but I realized he was a phony because he used the name Bernard Fife.”

I don’t know hat the current DCU continuity is, but when James Robinson was writing his classic Starman comic in the 90s, there was no Earth 2. Jack Knight, the 90s Starman interacted with a lot of DCU heroes from both of what used to be called (before the first Crisis) Earth 1 and Earth 2. If you want to read great comics, get the collections of that series.

I don’t suppose they’re going to get rights or permissions to do anything outside of the Tribune family, at least not any of the big names outside of TMS.

I wonder if Silver and Sprocket have ever been to Funky Winkerbean’s town, Westview? Probably not, all they have there are two high schools, a pizzaria and the Komix Korner.

Yes, Ted was the father of Jack and actually a Golden Ager. He was featured quite prominently on the 90s series.
