A bit off the subject: Regarding yesterday’s comment on Gasoline Alley’s location, it’s in and around the Galax , Va area. Not only does Jim attend the annual Old Fiddlers Convention there, but years ago there were visual Galax references on posters advertising John Hartford’s concert appearance in the strip.
If you missed him at the Old Fiddlers Convention and hope to catch Jim at home you could do worse than visiting the outskirts of NC’s Queen City. Jim, you do great honor to all your predecessors!!!
I was thinking Bob and Ray when Hulla first showed up..Mineola: Whoa, Nelly! A John Hartford sighting? Was that in this strip? Or just a distant – but, oh, so pleasant – memory?
Wally Ballew (Ballou?) was hilarious, and probably too subtle to go over on a population that grew up watching TV shows created by the likes of Aaron Spelling or Chuck Barris.
Ahh, and John Hartford. I remember George Carlin singing a parody of “Gentle on my Mind” with the words, “It’s knowin’ that your door is always open and your furniture is GONE…” Doctor Demento used to play a John Hartford song called, “Hey, Babe, You Wanna Boogie?” that was nothing like I’ve ever heard before or since.
Several years ago, when the Greensboro, NC News & Record dropped GA (Dumb idea), people wrote in saying some of the buildings in GA resembled those in Greensboro. From hints in the strips, I always thought GA was in the Carolinas. Of course, it might be like Salem in Days of Our Lives and shift locations at the convenience of the story line. Galax is in the mountains, and GA appears to be a “flatland” town.
While you are reminiscing about the many, many great sketches by Bob and Ray think back to the time Wally interviewed the contractor building the Trans-Atlantic Bridge. Even though the work was only partially completed they opened the bridge so as to get toll money to finance completion. The beauty of old time radio and your imagination!!!

One more thought on yesterday’s strip, Gertie’s shout out reminds me of G.M. on old SNL rebroadcasting the news for the hard of hearing.

I never let my college lay minister forget about dropping that T when the Epistle lesson referred to Christ bringing immortality into the world.
