Watched the opening ceremonies. The two to light the Olympic (what should we call that great swoosh?) were Irina Rodnina (pairs figure skating) and Vladislav Tretyak (hockey).

But not just any skater or hockey guy. Irina is very talented. And Tretyak? Just the greatest goalie ever!(see 1972 Summit Series)...Now I’m off to find that app…… or another…. never know – but it better be free!

Tretiak was very good and made the Hockey Hall of Fame on his own merits but in ’72 he lost the last three games at home including giving up 6 in Game 8, three with a 5-3 lead. Ken Dryden was the winning goalie. Martin Brodeur might be best ever, so far.

I’ve often wondered if the Olympics would be improved if people competed for themselves (the way they do in international marathons, tennis tournaments, and so forth). Yes, they come from a country, and that fact does get mentioned, and there’s an end on it. In the Olympics, we always have some people competing for countries they just happened to be born into (but spent little if any time there), and the hypocrisy of honorary citizenships for purely sports purposes in some extreme cases! All that aside, the opening ceremonies were very impressive.
