That wet sock (or is it a bone) is a better option that the lovely present of a bird carcass – minus the middle … just the feet and the head. Same for mice carcasses with the inedible bits left behind…usually at the front door.
Labs like to share. I had a chocolate lab that used to share her tennis balls. Whenever I packed for a business trip she would drop one of her tennis balls in my luggage while I wasn’t looking.
They’re not “gifts”. Dogs and cats realize that humans are morons and have no idea what the real world is about. When a cat drops a dead mouse on your pillow, he’s saying, “Look, this is food. See the food? This is what you’re supposed to be eating. Now, go out there and get your own food.” It’s not a “gift”, it’s a training exercise.
reminds me I have to start putting something smelly in my carry bag for the trip home from work. My neighbour’s dog Buzz likes to put his entire head in the bag and get a really good sniff. Even if it means pushing that bag all the way to the ground.
Jake, one of the pit bulls at the shelter where I volunteer, always likes to take a toy along when we go for a walk. One time he managed to fit 3 tennis balls in his mouth. Usually somewhere during our walk he will jump up and deposit a toy in my jacket pocket.
Tessa always has a toy that she dangles part way out of her crate. But she doesn’t really want to share, she just wants you to grab an end so she can play tug!
Our shelter dogs are so wonderful, I wish I could adopt them all.

Sophie just learned a hard lesson. Not all humans “get” their pets.
