Something like that happened in the Confederacy during the Civil War. So much paper money was printed by both the central government and the individual states that it rapidly lost its value. People carried their money to the stor in a shopping basket and took their purchases home in their purses, as was said at the time. This paper money problem had also happened during the American Revolution, with similar results.
