Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for February 21, 2014
Transcript:
President King: So why is Walden making such a bold switch to subprime education? In a word, opportunity! Instead of constantly teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, the university can capture hundreds of millions in student aid and reward top executives with a whopping... er... pittance! Friend: A whopping pittance? Zipper: Sounds fair.

Like public universities don’t already do that?

The other day, some posts were lamenting the lack of a comment section for “9 Chickweed Lane” Since there’s not much happening with Doonesbury, and this space often devolves into political bickering, what about borrowing it to engage in dialogue re “9”?

Government universities are at least as wasteful as their private-sector counterparts. They just spread the loot amongst more bureaucrats. The private sector has fewer illusions about the scam. In both cases anyone who does actual teaching usually gets the short end of the stick.

U of M may be a good school, but they can have their nasty weather. Lots of others have nasty winter weather, but their nasty winters just go on and on…

those laws legalizing hate, Christian style, just like the Muslim nuts, we have our own,aka the Republican Right. under the guise of Christianity. and they don’t think it’s hate filled to hate. Only in America in Kansas, Idaho,Arizona, and most Red states. lol. Ah Chrisitanity American style

LWP— later on today in Lawrence it will be 55. Ann Arbor has a high of 36. Sorry, I have been in both places. I’ll take our crappy weather over their crappy weather. I love ya LWP, but can’t let you have this one.

In Kansas, we tend to get a very wide range of temps. That is normal for us.

‘Whopping’ = relative term

I guess every place gets a wide range of temps— just to clarify, I meant in terms of a daily wide range of temps is not unusual. We are talking a range of 20-30 degrees, not just 5-10.

If the kids who have a college degree have a hard time getting a job, think of how difficult it will be for those who don’t have a college degree. It couldn’t be easier for those who only have a high school diploma/GED or less. I would like to see more kids getting help with their higher ed costs, not just pre-K, which is important too. Obviously, we should all care about other kids, if we want to live in a safe world with a viable economic future.

They are when they legalize discrimination. Of course, to you, you’re perfect, it’s just the other side that hates, because they disagree with you.

Well, not everyone in Kansas is hate-filled. Sometimes it takes a little time for people to know what is really going on in a place vs. what is reported. Last night, I saw Jon Stewart (and I am a big fan of his) talking about bill legalizing spanking that would leave marks. That bill never got out of committee in the Kansas state senate. Those of us who live in Kansas saw that fact reported today. Whether or not the rest of the country will know or not, I don’t know.

I guess every place has their own oddities and strange folks. I have heard that both Texas and Michigan actually allow blind people to own and shoot firearms. David Sedaris has written about this. Michigan can be a pretty progressive place, but not everyone who lives there is a progressive lefty either.

I am all in favor of rights for the handicapped, but who would want to go hunting with a blind person? I will not be signing up for that, sorry.
montessoriteacher almost 11 years ago
Touche, Coyoty. I guess that had to be considered in this discussion. Still, there are just a few problems with a blind person having a hunting license, one would think.

‘“fundamentally” Pharisaic ’Please don’t associate the Pharisees with these imitation Christians. They only got a bad name because it was necessary for the authors of the Gospels to come up with a villain that wasn’t Roman. Those of us that survive consider ourselves the descendants of the Pharisees. From a really fascinating magazine;.http://www.biblicalarchaeology.org/daily/people-cultures-in-the-bible/biblical-pharisees-and-jewish-halakhah/

There are plenty of really funky things which are truly bad in Kansas. No need to make things sound worse than they really are… The fact that a doctor who spent his life trying to help women was murdered by someone who didn’t believe that women should have reproductive rights is a great example of something which was a messed up thing that did indeed happen in Kansas, for example.

I still don’t consider them Christians. This reminds me of a Mark Twain story in which a modern kid goes back to old England. When a friend says he will devote himself to making the kid a Christian, the kid says, “Oh, please, don’t, for then I should be the loneliest person in the world!”
