Little exceptions, when it’s spring, sun is shining and plants are blooming, when it’s time for swimming in summer, in autumn, when there are piles of leafes to jump in, and in winter for building snowmen and go down the hill with the sled!!
For what ever reason, the town I live in has had an explosion of very creative snowmen (snowmans?? but some of them are girls…) this year. And now something new called a ‘Snow Dude’: a cone shaped snow pile with a face on it. Some were really well done.
That’s Calvin’s parents’ fault for not teaching him responsibility by forcing him to work when he has to even though he’d rather play, so he gets used to doing what he has to do even when he’d rather do something else.
Basing actions on future consequences comes with maturity, which little kids by definition don’t have. That’s why simply leaving kids on their own to learn to do the right thing from the consequences of their actions doesn’t work.
I was wondering about this because I know they end this story here, but it would be nice to see if Calvin ever did finish that homework or if he got in trouble for not doing it. I do have to agree with HobbEs though. I’ve always had the same problem with assignments hanging over my head if they’re not done right away.
one of those, there professors who taught me things in college said that “Play is the Work of the child.” Reflecting back on my formative years, when we played whatever sport was in season, ate unshelled peanuts and looked at clouds, sat in trees for hours on end and roamed the woods any time we had a few extra minutes, I’d say that the prof was right. Somehow, I ended up with my own mutated Puritan work ethic and also derived a skewed form of scheduling my kid’s activities. The world is different from the time that Watterson, and many of us engaged in our “work,” but I found that it is possible to facilitate kids exploration of the world without living vicariously through their activities.

This is called “Calvin-logic”. But it always seems to get him in trouble. Therefore it is “illogical”. Or something like that. ;-)

Good thinking Calvin. Building a snowman in your yard is homework.
