The Popeye song parody is fun. It echoes the most common replacement for the second line that get changed to “I live in a garbage can.” Kids love this because it’s funny. Here’s a sample kid:
Toot Toot! Sam’s Popeye parody is great! It livens up today’s dismal dumpster dive. But what will the discarded jacket tell our detectives? And why haven’t they entered the theater, to see if Mycroft is hiding there?
Hey Tracy should be singing that song since Popeye is one of his new best friends! And Silver and Sprocket already left town. Did the bad guys escape from the great Dick Tracy?
Just when I think it’s not possible to “out do” themselves, Joe and Mike accomplish another leap forward. Mike with his cleaver writing skills and Joe with his art. What an enjoyable Sunday page today.
Two points here, JPW:They might not know that the blood-stained jacket is Silver’s, but we do. Silver made a comment about getting rid of it on January 31;And as to your comment, “By the way, I share the same work habit that Sam has, I tend to sing (or hum) while I’m working, too. I’ve been complimented on my baritone voice”…I guess as long as you’re not an undertaker or a librarian, then that’s completely acceptable!
Good one Pequod! You win the poet’s prize for today again! And the spinach can may just have what’s left of Sprocket’s jeans in it. Too nasty for Lena!
Love the way Sam’s eye looks in the last panel and the variation on the Popeye song. Team Tracy takes the prize for artwork and writing. Nice job, folks!
The Sunday LimerickTracy believes there’s a cacheof some evidence hidden in trash.Sam unearths (as he croonssongs from “Popeye” cartoons)someone’s jacket all shredded and slashed.
It is always good to see Sam take center stage. Yet another great Gould creation done proud by Team Tracy. His wit is put to good use, even as he works the case. I like this latest nod to Popeye. Crimestoppers takes us to Honolulu today and I could use a little sun and surf about now. Here is Sam in the snow, offering more evidence that Tracyville is my kind of town, Chicago. Thanks to Gweedo, Neil Wick, JPuzzleWhiz, mzkdad, morrow and ave09 for the kind words. Much appreciated.
Here is a good summary of some legalities of looking through trash: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070107191115AAWbZR7 though I think it’s not public domain as long as it’s on your own property regardless.
Sam is parodying the tune, “I’m Popeye the Sailin’ Man” that was created for the classic Popeye cartoons that began in 1933. In 1934, the cartoon studio that produced Popeye, The Fleischer Brothers, produced a shorter-than-usual short, “Let’s Sing with Popeye” that’s just the song itself. I felt that was the best film to copy an html to:

Curtis and Staton are certainly Popeye fans.
Not long ago, The Tracy Family met a characteer who certainly suggested THE Sailor Man himself.

You get the feeling maybe Curtis and Stanton REALLY wanted to draw Popeye? (Not that they’re doing a bad job here, mind you…)
