Well, they’re off to see Dick Tracy. Depending on how long it takes them to get there, we could see an Annie search happening very soon. I can’t yet say how this will tie in to some of the other characters we’ve seen lately. Maybe Sunday is yet another chance to resolve the fate of the Nitrates, but all this other stuff needs to be introduced to the readers of Sunday-only papers, too.
Unfortunately, slots are hard to come by these days, but if two Sunday slots were possible I’d be all for it. Maybe if Annie were still running, they could actually manage two slots. :)
I really enjoy these occasional crossovers. Thank you, Mike and Joe! There are hints here that this could turn into something major — possibly even resulting in the rebirth of “Annie”? Pinch me if that’s true!!
With all due respects, may I repeat my prediction from late yesterday –
My prediction –The new Annie strip will begin on Sunday, April 20.
The current story line in “Annie” will end on Saturday, April 19, which was originally done on July 19, 2003. This ends the arc with Ben saying, “Ha! Little Orphan Annie! Guess you’ve been around the track a few times at that…”
Check the “Annie” strip for July 19, 2003 and you’ll see what I’m talking about. This is a most appropriate time to end the “reprint” Annie stories and get back to the story of Annie and the Butcher of the Balkins, with Dick Tracy, Punjab, and the Asp hot in pursuit!
Wel, well, well. Daddy Warbucks, the Asp, who in my mind’s eye should look more like he does here, and Punjab are on their way to enlist Tracy’s aid! This could be fun!
Warbucks has a lot of friends all over the world. Maybe he has other friends named ‘Dick Tracy’, “My Japanese friend, Dick Tracy”“My Canadian friend, Dick Tracy”“My Martian friend, Dick Tracy”
thro out the trash ……….. still the man material ……………… most of the time the champ or the one with the crown does NOT give their best effort next time around. case in point ……………………….. it has been in my opinion going south way too fast.
Wouldn’t it be a hoot if the mystery of Annie’s whereabouts is solved before we find out what happened to the Nitrates? Perhaps if “The New Adventures of Annie” becomes a reality the favor can be returned by having Sandy saving Lena and the two of them running off to see the Wizard who turns out to be a grownup Dondi that has ace reporter Brenda Starr on staff and has his clothes designed by Winnie Winkle and manufactured by Mike Motley.
Maybe the phrase “our American friend” should have been “our friend in America.” Some time ago, Daddy Warbucks had moved his base to Millenium City, which he’d built in the Yucatan Peninsula.
I was never much of an Annie fan, but I like these little crossover sidebars as we prepare for the next story. I’m really most interested in learning more about Mysta, Venus, Melies, and any other space-themed characters who may be roaming the Tracy universe. Moon Governor and his wife and daughters, anyone?
When I was a kid, I read Annie all the time. Eventually, my hometown newspaper cancelled the strip and I lost interest in Orphan Annie. I was impressed when the strip was revived but never regained my former enthusiasm for the strip. Still, I don’t mind the crossover. I actually find it intriguing. I’m interested to see what develops.
I discovered Annie when I came across a wonderful collection in the library many years ago: Arf! The Life and Hard Times of Little Orphan Annie: 1935-1945. I found that much of what I liked about Dick Tracy was present in Little Orphan Annie. There were long stories and an array of interesting characters. The fantastical elements provided by Asp, Punjab and Mr. Am were especially captivating. I never forgot that great collection and bought a used copy a few years ago. Good stuff.
No, I’m not affiliated in any way with the team. I’m a long-time member of the Yahoo Dick Tracy interest group, whose owner seems to have disappeared so can’t approve new members. Mike occasionally posts little hints of what’s coming up, but that is the only “inside” knowledge I have.
Beyond that, everything is detective work, based on what’s in the strip. Since there are sometimes small spoilers mentioned in the Yahoo group, I try to limit my comments to what I can see in the strip. The only thing I really have beyond that is occasional cryptic hints from the Yahoo group and my imagination as to what might happen in the strip.
CF, you are correct in only a small amount of your info. Otto Baron was not and is not a bully, IMHO. StillDaMan and avenger09 are one in the same, aka Mattie, of which two of the three names got pitched out by the moderator, IMHO. You have to go back several years, but one of the alias’ threatened a lawsuit as recently as last week. You happened to get ringside seats to the Center Ring. They’ll all come back, itching for a fight. That’s the only attention they get and they thrive on it. It’s a shame you didn’t see (make that “read”) Matthew P. Hansel’s infamous rant a few months ago. If you were a judge on the Gong Show, you’d have given him a perfect ten! Unfortunately, GoComics wasn’t impressed.
Is it my eyes, or does it look like, given how Joe drew him, Punjab has lost a little weight?___________________________
Perhaps it is just a matter of artistic style but I don’t think either Punjab or Asp look nearly as foreboding as Gray drew them. Perhaps it is that they are in broad light and not shadows.
I loved Vah-li-tin the Roamer, who had a device operated by a 6 sided TARDIS-styled control console. I believe he once accidently dropped a T-Rex in Valley Forge.

“Our American Friend”? Odd thing for Warbucks to say, unless he’s now British per the ’82 film.
