The original version of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, introduced by a Democrat at the urging of President Kennedy, was hopelessly stalled in the Senate, with members of the Democratic Party filibustering for 47 days to block it’s passage.A different version, introduced by Senators Everett Dirksen (R-IL), Thomas Kuchel (R-CA), Hubert Humphrey (D-MN), and Mike Mansfield (D-MT), was the version that was er\v eventually signed by President Johnson.
If those who benefited from the Civil Rights Act of 1964 had joined the Republican Party as a block in the ’70’s and 80’s, it would be a much different party today
Miserichord: I can’t speak for the Senate, but that Ralph Hall I’m saddled with did in the House. The real downer is that he has Sam Rayburn’s old seat, District 4. And so did a bunch of non-Senators like John Connoly.
