Sounds like the way I talk to my cat. At least he doesn’t talk back or make YouTube videos!

Why do people talk like this to either children or pets? Just talk to them in a normal way for heaven’s sake!

Since when is Ellie friendly with Farley. She did not want him in the first place. And Michael it is not nice to blackmail your mother on Mother’s Day. Not to worry Ellie will grab the tape recorder from him and smack him around.

I was sure that she was buttering the dog up for a bath.

I believe the dog and I both thought he was going to get a bath.

You can run, Michael, but you can’t hide.

Wasn’t there a Mother’s Day strip where John got the kids to make a homemade card of all the things Elly did for them, such as “cooking”, “drives us to swimming”, and so forth?

Given the weekly arc leading up to this, I was expecting something more appropriate; butHappy Mother’s Day (eCard)Mine passed in 2005 (she was 95) — no condolences necessary.

I talk to my dog this way and she loves it! Her tail wags like crazy! She got jealous when she heard my mom talking to her baby granddaughter this way. You could tell she was thinking “But I’M the baby in this family!” So spoiled! ;-)

The way she was warming up to Farley made me think she planned on giving him a bath.

Fortunately for Ellie, this was long before YouTube and Facebook!

    *Lynn’s Notes:

Behind closed doors, I had a dopey, mommy-to-doggie vocabulary, which I shared with Farley alone. I even had a song I sang to him, and later, I made up a song for Willy, our small black spaniel. While openly criticizing other pooch-parents for talking baby talk to their canine family members, I was doing the very same thing. My dogs appreciated it. This was a language we shared in the privacy of my home. This Sunday page allowed readers into our secret world. I believed that the sheer stupidity of what Elly was saying would be taken as “made-up cartoon dialogue,” but not so. I received several letters from readers telling me they used the exact same words of endearment!*

BurkeKnight: Remember Grundoon in Pogo, who spoke only in consonants? I speak fluent Grundoonese and can get the most cantankerous baby grinning, just by striking up a conversation in that language – usually 15 – 30 seconds, never over a minute.
