This recalls the real life case many years ago where a mutuel clerk had a “sure thing” inside tip on a first time starter. So, he not only bet his own money, but his entire customer take from the previous races….his horse was winning by 10 lengths…..but broke a leg yards from the finish line…..clerk had room and board for several years courtesy of the state, lol. Could a similar scenario be in store for Kolossal….but this time betting against a ringer?

misterseth said, about 16 hours agoJust wondering, was Mysta’s current look based off of this?: http://static.comicvine.com/uploads/square_medium/1/10135/247569-118544-skywise.jpg
It is similar to Wendy Pini’s Skywise, but I think it is more likely the influence was from these three super gals. The Scarlet WitchEnchantressStar Sapphire
Thirty to one? Hmmm, I think Kolossal said that Angus was going to get 5 times what he owed him. On the other hand, if a bunch of people start betting on the long shot, the odds will increase.
My brother, in a Dick Tracy strip? That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever hoid! Outside of a dog, a book is a mans best friend. Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read…
Joe Staton also drew a Plastic Man strip for Adventure Comics #478 (Dec 1980) entitled “A Night At The Nuthouse”. The bad guys were Marx Bros. knock-offs w/ the Chico character named Minnastroni.
Strange… I downloaded :Day at the Races" from YouTube yesterday and watched part of it. Now, Chico is in the DT comic strip! I thought that the Marx Bros. would go places!
Sounds to me as though Rusty’s tip is about the real Sparkplug, disguised as some never-was nag at 30-1. There will be so many different enforcement agencies coming down on this scam, if they’re tipped, that Kolossal will (if he’s lucky) spend most of the rest of his life in the old greybar hotel….—Nice cameo by Chico, too.

Looks more like Harpo to me, but since Harpo never spoke, I’m not sure if this is supposed to be him or Chico. Whichever, I like the reference to “A Day at the Races.”
Uh. watch “A day at the races” Thats Chico.Yes the Brothers did lok a lot alike. The “Mirror” scene from “Duck Soup” proves that with all three dressed as Groucho in a niteshirt.
Not only could Harpo speak, but he was a very witty and intelligent man who was a regular at the Algonquin Round Table. Plus, of all his brothers (even Gummo) he was the only one to marry once and stick with it.
I love the Marx Brothers reference, and think Neal is right about Abbot and Costello playing the ponies. I appreciate the depth of the tale. What a very few may see as jumping around, I see as a complex story with many moving parts. Following up on fun-filled death traps and an exciting chase, we get Mysta in a movie (nuzzle, nuzzle), Vera’s J. Straightedge Trustworthy, Kolossal Studios (and a Harold Gray character) and Mr. Angus with those fierce green eyes. The racetrack is yet another great setting. The strong sense of place and variety of settings makes for a rich, rewarding strip..Hat’s off for the fun video clip, drawings and photos today. Nice to see so many people excited about and focused on the strip.

Apparently Kolossal isn’t just underhanded and has a gambling problem, he also had a loose mouth. That’s a bad combination.

Well, Joe Staton was an inker for Wendy Pini’s Elfquest years ago, so it certainly could be an influence.

Harpo never spoke, but the way the hair is colored here, it could be mistaken for him, and the brothers occasionally dressed up as each other.

But who are the other two dudes? They look familiar, but for the life of me, I can’t come up with their names!
I best guess, though I’m really not quite convinced, is Abbott and Costello:It’s true that they often wore bowler hats, but certainly not always, and if only one was wearing a hat, it would be Lou Costello.
