Look at “pie bird” in Wikipedia. The pie in the poem was so big it needed 24 birds to support the crust.

Trivia time, from Ren Faire:In the 16th century, an influx of “boy kings” required the creation of fanciful cooking. Hard Boiled eggs 3 feet Diameter, TurDuckEn, and Black Bird pie were created to amuse the king.

Don’t worry, Hammy. When the pie was open the birds began to sing. And I now have that song in my head for the day.

As I had heard the story, it was about Henry VIII and the period after he had confiscated the properties of the Catholic Church. He had the deeds (blackbirds) baked into a large pie and gave them away to his various cronies when he opened the pie. “And the birds began to sing” Henry’s praises.
