I grew up in Brooklyn in the 1950’s. The streets in my neighborhood were wall-to-wall tenements. I did the math: with two kids per apartment (a conservative estimate for the baby boom era), there were 600 kids on my block and every one of them was out on the street from sunup to sundown during the summer.
