I remember doing this myself as a kid, letting the hand-brake off, at the top of the steep drive. I think I was pretending it was a spaceship or something.

When my kids were young my car had a stick shift. There was no interlock and it was easy to release the parking brake and pull the stick out of gear. Solution – LOCK THE CAR always, even in the garage!

Hmm…I think Calvin is planning to leave Dodge soon…

Or should I say the Dodge left Calvin??

A lot of commenters on this arc don’t know that these are old strips, and don’t seem to be aware that there are cars with manual transmissions. No park setting and don’t need a key to release the brakes.

Quite right Hobbes. Most kids would total the car when they reach 16 and start driving. Calvin managed to do it at age 6.

But it might lose a little value owing to its being in the gulch.

Mom must have left the car in neutral and forgot to put on the parking brake. I blame her.

Oddly enough my truck would have a mind of it’s own when my nephew was riding shotgun. The darn thing would go in the opposite direction of my steering. Since we lived in a desert it was no big deal..Of course, after a nice rain the truck REALLY wanted to play in the mud. Calvin should blame his woe’s on my nephew David, aka ankle biter, yardape, carpet crawler, diaper filler etc.

“Seriously- “not the kids fault”? That in a nutshell is what’s wrong with our society today.”

If it were a handgun, loaded and within easy access of a six year-old, would you say the same? Who is presumed to have the knowledge and the foresight, the child or the adult? I would argue that persons who believe that only the “good old days” could be morally relevant are the “problem with our society today”.

Cars now not that east to push. I agree with you if a child can push a car something is wrong with the car.

A friend of mine was was stopped by the police for backing down the highway. When asked why, she replied that she had driven too far and was trying to take mileage off!(1950s – won’t work on cars today)

Price of a new car? I found an article from 1964 stating the average yearly pay for a teacher. A teacher could then buy a new car for about 1/3 of a years wages. My son is a teacher, and says today, though both have risen, it would take at least 2/3 of a years wages to buy a new car!
