    But identifying the root doesn’t necessarily reveal the current meaning. In this case, her imagined meaning is obsolete. In fact, the current relevant definition is: “annoying or objectionable due to being a showoff or attracting undue attention to oneself:” Fits.

    No, Gracie knew what she was talking about. That boy is bringing in a harmful theory to bring down Gracie’s self-esteem. Therefore he is being harmful. Ergo, Gracie has fired that word right back at him with its root meaning. You go Gracie.

    I was in Gracie’s position as a young person, and found out the hard way that merely engaging with anyone like that would take its toll on me over the years and twist me into the same hater, only a percieved higher-class one :-(Run away! Just by engaging you are just like them.

    Ahem—-If Gracie is SO smart she would know that she used the subjunctive case when she used “IF”. So it should be " If I weren’t so smart…" NOT “wasn’ t” so smart.
