Gracie: Why do people think using BIG WORDS is a bad thing? Do you know I'm an egghead, Nora? Nora: Gracie, you're an intellectual fascinated by the galaxy of knowledge that surrounds us. Nora: You're a role model, too.
I always get discouraged, being a teacher, that of all the activities in school that students participate in, the one that consistently gets the least recognition, and is in some situations almost discouraged is academics. In our region for example we can no longer recognize our honour and high honour graduates as that is exclusive of other students. However, we are still encouraged to have an awards night recognizing athletic excellence, and excellence in other extracurricular pursuits, on the assumption excellence in these activities is somehow more inclusive.
As a medical librarian, I find it much easier to find information on a concept for which there is a precise, if big, medical term than one with just a plethora of common words and phrases.
When I was in high school back in the 1960s, those of us who excelled in academic activities were awarded a “letter” like those given to student athletes who excelled at their sport. It sure made me feel appreciated!

You are a very good role model Gracie, don’t let anyone talk you into “dumbing” yourself down.

Being smart doesn’t mean it is a good thing to be a smart ass, or talk down to others. Basicly adapt to your audience.

Only poorly educated people think using big words is a bad thing. A great vocabulary is a wonderful thing to have.

Since joining this site, I’ve often wondered what would happen if Gracie, Calvin, and Danae happened to be in the same room together???
