sjoujke I think I remember reading once that Jon is a cartoonist ,yep just checked wikipedia and as far as they know he is still a cartoonist and holds a degree in art … HTH

To be fair, Jon did just learn Sudoku 2 days ago… Anyway he should say he’s been working on an extra hard version! Who said they were the same puzzle?!

The old “feeling small” cartoon gag. I’ve seen that in cartoons and a few live-action sitcoms for years!

To make it even more humbling, remember that Garfield helped him with it in the last strip!

She ought not to brag about being smarter and that’s all a comment like this does. If she’s willing to settle for a man who’s IQ must be far beneath hers she has to remember not to rub his nose in that fact.

I’ll bet Jon’s not smarter than a 5th grader!

Admittedly, this isn’t one of Liz’s shining moments. But in all likelihood, she’s committing (as is Jon) the “general intelligence” fallacy (and why not, everyone else does thanks to Stanford and Binet). Jon has a different kind of intelligence than either Garfield or Liz. For him, Sudoku is a stretch. Cartooning isn’t. I’ll bet neither of the other two can draw to save their lives.

Liz, may I recommend some reading in the works of Linda Berens and Dario Nardi? :)

I myself drink coffee all during the day and it’s because of Liz comment about finishing her puzzle during breakfast and I guess because she has the cup with steam raising out of it caused my wife to wonder how long Liz had been there… No matter when it comes right down to it I guess.

Maybe she finished it when she ate breakfast the morning after she started! Probably not, but just tell Jon that to give him self esteem.

Perhaps just my frame of mind but I real a little deeper into this strip which could end after panel two.

What does Jon Arbuckle do for a living?

In the “Garfield” debut strip –19 June 1978– Jon, breaking the fourth wall with Garfield, said he’s a cartoonist.

That poor, poor man. He can do (or “did”) cartoons, but cannot do a sudoku.

It doesn’t matter what a loser Jon is. He’s always been one. The thing is, Liz knows he’s one and chose to be with him even though she’s smart. Jon may be a loser and we all know he’s not too swift, but he is not in any way mean. I took what she said to him as mean spirited. We just accept Jon for who he is, and now the best thing he’s ever found is slamming him. That’s Garfield’s job.

Not to get so far into it, but that’s the instantaneous thought process that prompted my response.

I know how Jon feels — I’m about the same level at Sudoku that he is. I don’t do Sudoku anymore.
