Joanie: It's an application, Howie. I'm applying to law school. Howie: Law school? Why do you want to go to law school? Girl: What a dumb question, Howie! She's going to law school because one day she's probably going to be a senator! Howie: How silly of me... Girl: And when I grow up, I'm going to be one of her top aides, right, Ms. Caucus? Joanie: That's right, dear... Howie: Me, too! Me, too! Can I be a top aide, too?! Girl: Depends. You got any skeletons in your closet? Howie: None of your bee's wax!

Ellie and Howie (and Jeanie) were peripheral characters that hung around at the far edges of the strip even after Joanie left the daycare and they stopped having any connection to the main cast. We would return periodically to listen in on their conversations, which often had something to do with the ERA. By 1981 they had aged slightly to being first graders, and were among the guests at Joanie and Rick’s wedding. They last appeared in the “Hands Across America” Sunday strip from 1986.

I have been waiting for Ellie to turn up in Washington and work for Joanie for a couple of decades now.

Yes, how silly of you, Howie.

Joanie only supported others in office. She wasn’t interested in running, though that could have been interesting. The Clay Aiken race had an odd twist yesterday due to a sad turn of events.

I may be confused here – did Joanie not end up working with Lacey?

@LadyKat, you are correct. Joanie decided against running for senator herself at some point, but proved a top aide for Lacey Davenport.

Yes she is true feminist you can tell by the fact she left her daughter behind to be spoiled by a man who thought so little of her as a woman. Again I did not expect anything less after reading the strip where Bernard stated his gf was only 7 but he loved her very much.

This series may be a ‘retrospect,’ but for me, it’s an old worn-down road, yet for our newer guests on the planet, an untamed wilderness and they oughta respect “what was, wayback when”in them nasty ol’ seventies.Just read it and enjoy, chillun’!!
