Frazz by Jef Mallett for May 19, 2014
Transcript:
Caulfield: Sorry I'm late. The weekend wrote a check this morning couldn't cash. Mrs. Olsen: Sure, Caulfield. That old line was written for weekends you'll never come close to. Take your seat. Caulfield: Turns out low expectations are especially useful when they're other people's. Frazz: I couldn't have said it better.

Check it at the door, Caulfield. But on the other hand, it seemed to have worked.

As you get older, Caulfield, you’ll often find yourself with those “insufficient funds”

I’ve had some of those weekends, when I was much younger.

Once again I don’t understand this strip—is this a quote from somebody semi-famous that only erudite and highly educated people know? (Like Caulfield and Frazz)

Seems to me that these lower expectations work AGAINST Caulfield, in that the teacher doesn’t believe his excuse.

See if I can’t explain it for those who need some help. Caul field was late and was trying to get skirt around the issue of being late. His quote was to get Mrs. Olsen to bite, which she did with her teasing of Caulfield. Caul fields remark to Frazz about low expectations was in reference to Mrs Olsen’s low expectations of Caulfield’s excuse being valid enough to warrant his tardiness. His ruse to get out of trouble for being late seemed to have worked.
