Around here when the equipment dies the batteries are removed and the remote saved because it’s amazing how many TV’s, stereos, etc. all use the same or similar command codes(often the only difference may be the name plastered on the item. I’ve had a small TV picked up at a yard sale for a just-in-case spare that responded to the remote for a long-defunct VCR.)
