Comedian Franklyn Ajaye on watching CNN in his hotel room while touring:“The world doesn’t change a whole lot in 30 minutes… doesn’t change all that much in 2 hours, either.”
I sure do not call Benghazi, IRS, VA Hospital, etc., manufactured outrage. I call it a government trying to hide crap to save their own skins & maintain power. This is corruption, flat out & straight.
It’s free news – they do not have to work to get it. Here is a new concept – go out and WORK to get the news and THAT will really be news. If it is handed to you then it ain’t news. What? There are racists and bigots in our country? Wow, we did not know that!
I got out of newscasting in part because of what people are doing elsewhere to get ratings (and there’s no distinction between blue and red there…it’s all about green). Today’s panel is a reminder that I made the right choice.
Never let the facts get in the way of a good story.
As a teenager, I got my news form shortwave broadcasts from a number of countries, it was interesting to see what they thought was newsworthy as compared with the U.S. This was back in the days of Cronkite and Huntley-Brinkley (none of whom have enough “sex appeal” to be TV journalists today – a good hairdo and a great set of boobs helps.).
It isn’t so much what they report, but rather what they choose to report. Riots, rape and murder go unreported unless a celebrity is involved. Wars in other countries aren’t newsworthy unless they can show some gory footage to go along with it.
… I just have to look good, I don’t have to be clear.
-There are still a few of us left who don’t get our news from so-called social media, but the reality is, there’s never been a time when any news outlet was unbiased. There WAS a time of fact-checking and research, but even then, bias was there. That’s why someone looking for ‘news’ needs to look in as many places as possible for all versions of ‘the truth’…
When I was in business, I would be interviewed once in a while on a question regarding one of the products I sold. Of course, I would always tune in to watch or listen to the report. The last time, after seeing the story, my only response was, “That’s not what I meant”. They edited the story, apparently to get the result they wanted. The next time they called on me, I agreed only if I was allowed to approve the story before it aired. Of course they said that would not be possible, so I told them I had nothing to say. They never asked me again.
Common cents are one thing, tho’ numismatists will tell us that there are cents as UNcommon as “common sense” so-called. Never understood why it’s called that, given that it’s the least common thingto be met with in the universe.
In a universe long ago and far away, I took some journalism courses, and had examples of real journalists to take lessons from. Journalism today isn’t totally dead in the U.S., but it’s on life support and they’re only keeping about three patients alive, in print, or other media.
The higher ups want our broadcast staff to beat the word OUTRAGE into the ground. Tomorrow the word is Monica. I repeat Monica, Practice in front of the mirror if you must.
I’m more and more convinced that for some unfathomable reason, Kurt Vonnegut gets to write the history of what’s happening now….It’s the only explanation…. Seat belts everyone!
" We interrupt this news broadcast to bring you a breaking story related (or not) to a a scandal that may or may not be of importance to you……blah blah blah…more on this as it develops. If and when there is any “GOOD” news in the world….I will be interested again.
