Mom was a good, basic cook—not a fancy gourmet chef as TV tries to sell us today; I miss several of her speciality dishes of which I was very fond.Go ahead, Broomie. Maybe you’ll like it!

I think my mom’s cooking gave me thoughts of running away from home. Head for the hills, Broomie.

My mom taught me how to cook. She also taught me how to choose meat at the butcher’s and stretch a dollar for food until it screamed for mercy.

Even though my mom’s parents ran a restaurant as she was growing up, her job was to run the cash register. I won’t say she was a “bad” cook, but when I went to college, I couldn’t understand why everyone was complaining about the food in the dorm cafeteria.

There was a diner like that in Florida many years ago. I was amazed that a simple corn soup could be rendered inedible. Completely. Inedible.
