I remember reading a science-fiction short story (about 30 years or so back) that used the idea that the lemmings were trying to migrate home to their spawning grounds, like salmon do, but continental drift had put an ocean in the way.

Only on Disney do lemmings run off cliffs, maybe because they had the Mouse so much?

yeah disney staged it. lemmings do mysteriously run though.
