It’s a cute storyline, but it would never work. Lila would never be able to afford Annie’s medical bills on her salary, and no insurance company would ever cover Annie in her condition. If the proposed health care bill ever gets passed, it would be a different story, but as it is, both Annie and real children with serious medical conditions have essentially no chance of getting adopted.

Hey JOE The state is paying for Annie’s hospital bill???

The taxpayer is paying for Annie’s hospital bill.

    The same comment to EDCOLE

Funny, my parents paid for my brother’s bill. Took 34 years. Pride paid that bill but I guess some think that others should pay for their misfortune. My brother, sister, and myself received no help from my parents for college, but we worked our way through knowing our family earned it’s own way. In the military we noticed that the sick, lame, and lazy reported to sick bay. The rest of us reported to duty.

That’s right and it will be no different if that idiot healthcare bill is passed.

The health care bill has been so watered down that it is too weak. What we need is something like the German system – it’s been around virtually unchanged for 125 years and has some of the best coverage in the world. They also have a bigger and wealthier middle class than the US.

The only idiots are those who think for-profit health insurance companies have your interests at heart.

Health care reform will only work if you combine it with tort reform. Doctors have to protect themselves from shysters and ambulance chasers and those who sue at the drop of a hat and from those jurors who say “sure we’ll give you a big settlement because after all it’s just the insurance company who’s paying and they can afford it”. One of my wife’s doctors gave up her practice and went back to teaching medicine because she couldn’t afford the malpractice insurance. I think malpractice insurance is one of the most expensive parts of health care as Americans know it.

Riiiight. Tort reform, read: “take away patients’ only recourse in cases of malpractice.” Good one.

Guess the discussion above just shows how important the idea of health care is to everyone. It is interesting how intense the discussion becomes about it, even when discussing Lila!

For the record, if Annie was a real person, would it matter one bleeep bit where the money for her health care came from? She has no family, and she is a child with no ability to generate income. It might turn out she has an inheritance that pays for medical care, or she might have a spontaneous remission, or she might die.

This is a real situation faced by real people today, and politics be bleeeped. One of the best uses of politics I can think of is to get the medical bills for real kids in the same position as Annie covered.

But it isn’t my story. :)

I do hope Lila adopts Annie, not only because it would make a great story and provide a lot of rich story material, but because in a way, Lila goes from being just an enjoyable comic that comments on life today, to a story that touches people right where they live.

Also, I like the idea of the comic progressing in time a bit. People change, and when the Lila books come out, it will be fun to watch how the characters in the strip grow.

P.S. Besides, Annie will make a great excuse for Lila to use when dealing with Alexandra! :)

i still think lila might just make a good mother

you know it is a shame that such a good comic strip has been reduced to nothing but a forum for politics and some peoples belief in or dislike of certain things not actually relevant to it

    Your right, bald!

I deleted my comment. Maybe Lila should just be a foster parent for Annie. This way, costs won’t be an issue, and she can spend all her time with her. All the love for a fraction of the price!

(might make Lila less cynical too!)
