You are an American, and don;t you ever forget it. If you refer to yourself as anything but an American, you are a snob. You may trace your roots back to earlier times to find out where you came from, but if you are an American, then be an American and proud of it.

I solved that problem some years ago. Any time I must answer the question “What is your RACE”…… I always put down “HUMAN”.

I’m learning to speak Spanish. Do you realize how many people that aggravates? Tons, that’s what. And no the two ladies speaking Spanish in the produce aisle aren"t talking about you.

That’s not what’s going on here KeepKeeper. If you have an hispanic surname, you’re bombarded with classification boxes on forms. Just yesterday at the doctors, the patient form I was filling out had multi ethnic categories, including three separate hispanic categories. It’s very confusing for kids who simply think of themselves as “American”.

Starving doesn’t mean you’ll croak in the next minute!! Of course, long-term starvation, that’s another thing.

Why do we want to emphasize the differences? We should all be proud of our past generations because they are the ones who sacrificed so much to bring us to this point. But we are Americans. Let’s stop hyphenating ourselves. Yes we have some differences, but that is what makes us strong as Americans.

Costantinepaleologos, No, México, they’ve said it often enough. I don’t know about you all, but I’m Spanish-American, I was born in the American continent of parents who spoke Spanish, and that’s that.

Taxman, normal people agree with you, but normal people are not in the bureaucracies. There is power to be mined by magnifying surface differences. The #1 discriminator in America today is the US Government.

Baldo’s definitely an American (okay, much of the world’s) teen – oblivious of the discussion around him.

Gracie’s an American of Mexican(?) descent (not sure if they’ve given their family origin)

If you’re born here youre a “native” American. Even the native Americans came from Asia’s across a land bridge they got here earlier but that’s all.

To clarify, all Americans other than pure-blood Native Americans have ancestors from other continents (not just Europe). It sounded as if you are saying that we are all of European descent, so I don’t think this came out quite how you intended. I know many Americans who are not of European descent, some of them first generation immigrants. We are all human, so that’s the important part.

If one really wants to get technical, even Native Americans are originally from Asia. They may have gotten here first but that’s their only valid claim. And yes they were unjustifiably displaced, but that has been the history of mankind. We are seeing it even today.

It’s a shame that we have mostly become tribal warriors in an age of wartime economics..
