My late son went vegetarian for awhile before he was killed. When he came back from the dark side, the two things he said brought him back were bacon and Popeye’s Fried Chicken.
I avoid meat. We had some ducks and chickens as pets, and our neighbors had cows when I was a kid. Knowing what it is can take out some of the fun of eating meat.
My Dad had cattle & hogs while I was a kid. If a sow had a big litter, Dad would bring home the runt. Either my sister or I would bottlefeed it, and raise it until it was large enough to sell. Dad allowed us to keep the money from selling it. I had no problem eating any of its big brothers or sisters, but then being the youngest, it seemed like great revenge on bullying, bossy siblings. I raised a lamb for 4-H, but we never had mutton to eat. Dad was scared I’d get hurt with a calf, so he never let me raise one. I still enjoy bacon, sausage, ham, pulled pork…. Doesn’t bother me a bit that I had hogs as pets.
