This is so right! The hierarchy of toys is very important when one is four years old. And teething marks are such an embarrassment!

And who beat them up and put teeth marks on them in the first place, little Alice?

While we were taking a daily walk around the block in the town where we lived at the time, my five-year-old daughter would take the dolls, bunny, chimpanzee and other assorted toys out of her doll-sized baby buggy and lay them carefully on the wide front steps of the Trinity United Methodist Church. (We did not attend there.) After they had enjoyed a suitable rest, or benediction, or whatever, she would gather them up and continue on her way.

Alice has a more limited hierarchy than my kids did — she didn’t mention the shelf toys, the closet toys, the toy box toys, or the two divisions of floor toys: out in the open or under the bed. Or the bedroom toys vs. the family room toys.
