Yeah, well, someone honored as much as Gil has been could “do so much more” than spend his life coaching high school teams. Only he likes doing what he does. Go figure.
All kidding and joking aside being a janitor or under achiever college is not for everyone. Everyone is under the impression that you have to go to college. The only ones who make out from this mentality are the colleges and the banks that loan the money for tuition. There’s always going to have to be the guy that does the bull work.
Of course, it has been an interesting year or so for Gil regarding former players. Now with the janitor and last summer with his former baseball star vandalizing Gil’s house.
I have questions for people here:
1) Are there any Gil Thorpe discussion boards around. I mean ones where you can post on the same topic for weeks on end.??
2) Anyone remember the first Gil Thorpe storyline they read?
Mine was in 1975 when Andy Tabor went out for football and his dad, Coach Mark Tabor was in a foul mood for some reason about it. Andy Tabor and Daren McBride ended up as friends and a major QB/WR tandem for the next two years.
IIRC, one of them, McBride or Tabor actually had a girlfriend who walked with a large crutch.
By the way, when I started reading about Daren McBride in 1975 he seemed like an incredibly arrogant, egotistical, self promoter.
But looking back now, I see his relentless determination to play football and win, plus his boundless leadership skills as Milford High football at it’s best.
3) Over the years, doesn’t it see odd that Mark Tabor is the coach who always seems to have problems with the players?
Doug Ellis, Jimmy Nevins, the three he kicked off the team for having long hair, Dean Dalton, Andy Tabor
The man needed some people skills.
4) Is there any kind of comprehensive list of Gil Thorpe’s assistant coaches over the years and what became of them?
Tod Andrews became head football coach at Oakwook.
Vince Tagget left coaching to work in industrial sales.
John Bates retired and was replaced by Tod Andrews.
I’ve been posting in the Bucket for years. There are a few other Bucketeers on here now too. Sick bunch of freaks (I say that with approval, of course).
Hm, what was Roy’s last name … the assistant basketball coach who used to play in the pros, and was named interim AD when Gil was being sued and the district had suspended him pending the resolution? The guy went to another area school as head coach …
The earliest Thorp strips I remember were in the Wally Lamb / Bitsy Twill days, mid-1990s?

Wow, Steve is going above and beyond the call of janitorial duty by personalizing the teachers trash cans. Go Steve!

I think that’s Steve’s secret file of “souveniers” he’s gathered of Mrs. Dolan. Little things of hers that somehow keep disappearing.

Interesting to see Thorpe basically get told off.

Those are just three I can think of.

I should’ve said Assistant Coach Vince Packard.
The one who lost a bunch of money playing poker and found himself dating the starting QBs girlfriend for awhile.
Of course Assistant Coach Jon Dowd was later accused (falsely) of having a thing with a student who was obsessed with him.
For that matter, Tod Andrews teenage daughter Abby developed a crush on Dowd and tried to hook up with him at the Prom only to get shot down.
Surprising the number of very contemporary and adult themes Gil Thorpe addressed.
