Only 11 of the 50 US states have can deposits… Canada has 11 of 13 provinces.

How well does it work? Here in Maine, roadside trash has been reduced to a tiny fraction of what it used to be. One thing to throw a can out the window–something else entirely to throw a nickel out the window. It’s such a small amount of money, but it has made a huge difference.

In my state not only did it clean the litter, but gave the homeless something to do. Now we need to go for water bottles and sports drinks.

Here in Saskatchewan, cans, bottles, tetra packs, and plastic bottles for juice, sports drinks, soda and water are all refundable for deposit at the recycling depot. Oh, and glass liquor bottles too. So there’s very few of those littering the place. Now, if there was something to be done with fast food containers….
