I don’t blame you, Buddy.

I wonder if Henry “Indiana” Jones, is this kind of plugger.

Or the ever-popular Bubba.

It is not s bad to be Ed but then they give you Eddie, so hide in initials or suffix or nickname, right, R. P. and R. D. ?

My dad was Bud to friends, Buddy to his family and Frank (Jr.) to the rest of the world. (His father was Frank (Sr.) and multiple uncles and cousins on both sides were Frank)

I find that nicknames are usually a term of endearment from someone close to you.

Y’all fergot “Hoss” folks still call me that.

Anyone whose name I can’t recall ends up being “Dude”.

Between my wife’s dad and her two uncles, there wasn’t a given name among them. One was called Junior, one was Red, and the last was Barney; and no, Barney was not a nickname for Bernard in this case: Not even close. Not a one of those appeared on any birth certificate (with the possible exception that her dad was in fact a junior).

I’ll bet Sheldon speaks from experience. Most of them prefer something like Bud to Shelly. Shelly Berman being an exception. (You need to be o-l-d to remember him!
