My foster mother made me get a job at 16. I didn’t want to: I would have preferred to concentrate on school, as the class load my junior and senior year was all AP. Then she had the gaul to either charge me rent out of the ~$60/week I earned, nevermind that she was already collecting money from the government and keeping my allowance portion; or she would “fine” me for minor infractions when she needed some cash and would raid my savings account for it. And she knew I was exhausted, but wouldn’t let me quit the job. There were many times I got woken up for supper and made cereal or microwave pancakes, thinking it was morning. The day I left for college was the happiest day of my life.
