I don’t agree here. If I can control my whole business with this device (which can be any brand), but I don’t care about making pictures with my finger, then I am not empowered.. its more important to make pictures because it looks cool even if I won’t make anything with that later than have a real use for it.. umm.. no, does not fit here
somehow it makes me remember how was the attitude of people when PCs got popular.. the PC was the magic machine that could do anything. People expected them to tell an order and the PC would do magic.. seems to be happening again. I buy a tablet (or a smartphone or whatever), and somehow the device will do magic, and I will be an artist because I have that device, even if I have no idea what to do with it… guess Betty was expecting it to write her book on its own..
I use my phone as a map and navigation guide for work (I’m a delivery truck driver) and believe me, a maps app is a freakin’ godsend.
I also use it as a translator when I have a language barrier with someone who cannot speak english. A godsend.
And the flashlight is also a freakin’ godsend, too.
Believe me, the iPhone/Android smartphones do empower, but not really in the way that the Apple ads showcase.
Perhaps the Android/Blackberry/Windows-Phone camps should shelve the Apple-bashing ads and showcase what people are REALLY doing with their phones.
Maps, translators, banking apps, a flashlight and other thank-god-I-have-this-phone features should be showcased, rather than nifty novelty clever things that just make you feel empowered, rather than the real deal….
empowered – doing the Christmas shopping and the store you want – that was there two months ago is – gone. Check on the smartphone – it says its still there on the same street – tried the touch screen on the phone number displayed – the darn thing called the store for me! Found out the store move 3 blocks away. … to those used to smartphones and maps and such – this may seem like ‘meh’. But this happened three months after getting my very first cellphone. – So I was amazed. And happy.

Art? Music? Who has time for that when there is texting to be done?
