India qualified for the 1950 soccer World Cup but refused to appear because the organizers would not let them play barefoot. Far out! In 1998, two toadfish were flown into orbit on the Space Shuttle to study the effects of zero gravity on balance- their ear canals are remarkably similar to those of humans. The famous psychologist Sigmund Freud suffered from Siderodromophobia- an irrational fear of trains.

I too would be concerned about the Indians’ feet being painfully stepped on by the other teams’ cleats.

One of the World Cup’s sponsors must have been a shoe company.

I swear the people who study Psychology do it to discover what’s wrong with them.

Wouldn’t an “irrational fear” be one of something to which there is no danger? There is a danger involved in trains (not that I have a phobia of trains).

Sigmund Freud was a psychiatrist, not a psychologist., two very different disciplines.

That was more the excuse the Indian FA gave after realising refusing to go to the World Cup was a huge mistake, according to their captain at the time. They’ve never qualified since, just to rub salt in. They didn’t feel the World Cup was important, so they declined to travel to Brazil, even though the majority of their travel costs would have been covered.

I think Freud’s train phobia stems from his near-fatal sword duel with Baron von Leinsdorf on the roof of the Orient Express in 1891…as described in John H. Watson’s memoir “The Seven-Per-Cent Solution.”
