Curious question here…Where do you live where there are no thunder storms? Maybe I was not in class the day this was discussed; but, I was under the impression lightening (and thunder, of course) can strike anywhere on the planet. More frequently in some areas, of course…
neverenoughgold: I remember in the mid ‘70s, there was thunder in Vancouver, BC. It made front page of the papers, reassuring people nothing exploded. "It’s really quite common in the interior", they explained.
Mediterranean geckos have entered our area since the green anole don’t survive winter very well. When they eat a lightning bug, you can see the flashes continue inside the lizard for up to a full minute.

I had never seen fireflies until a business trip to Ohio. Of course, I didn’t have a video cam handy.

Actually only the same lightning bug won’t strike twice, there’s plenty of others that can strike.
