This story reminds me more and more all the time of a Hardy Boys book. I like it.Maybe he really is doing some reconnaissance for an investigation this weekend (but not for a fishing trip).
Liar liar pants on fire! What Tracy’s doing, following up on a hunch all by his itty bitty self is reckless to say the least. Did he change clothes during the trip? Just wondering.
As has already been noted, Tracy is taking a big risk here by going out without a backup, no wrist wizard, and nobody knowing where he is. And on top of all that, he’s going out on Lake Michigan in a one man boat for a distance of 18 miles! Not smart! Not smart at all!
Tracy left an e-mail for Tess, which may include that he is going to scout out Thunder Island. Junior knows of the mysterious letter that he gave to Bonnie to give to Tracy. Tracy feels strongly that the letter is from Annie and may discreetly reveal her location. He has no certain knowledge of criminal activity nor warrant to search any part of the island. I like that Tracy is taking the initiative under cover of darkness. That he has not asked Sam to accompany him and does not possess his Wrist Wizard tells me that the story will best be served by having Tracy go to Thunder Island alone. As I am in no way bothered by artistic license taken with the moon (wonderful art once again: that third panel is especially fine), I am similarly unconcerned with Tracy’s decision to take a solo excursion. This story is humming right along with a fabulous cast of characters and mounting tension.
@Neil Wick:Reply function stopped working again. Thanks for the memories with those pictures! I had “The House on the Cliff” and several more in the Hardy Boys series in the original brown hardcover, with color dust jackets. My dear Aunt always bought me a Hardy Boys and a Ken Holt for birthdays, Christmas and such. I ended up with all but the last two Ken Holts, as I enjoyed them the best. I really loved the descriptions of small town life and weekly newspaper activity and printing. Did you ever read any Ken Holts? I know that more people have heard of the Hardy Boys, and there were way more books in the Hardy Boys series.
Warbucks simply bowed his head while shaking it in disapproval. “Amelia, Amelia, you can’t tell a young girl who’s used to excitement her whole life to go on an adventure. What do you think she’s going to do”? Santiago moved towards Warbucks and grabbing his shoulders with both her hands spoke in a firm voice. “Wake up Oliver, she’s emotionally not the young girl you remember. We may never get that Annie back. Things have changed.”Warbucks sighed while sitting back down. “I know Amelia, I know it! I’m just worried about her”. Santiago placed a comforting arm around his shoulder. “Of course, we all are. Let her take this little trip, this adventure. She promised to call. She’ll be alright”.While Warbucks pondered what Amelia said she continued; “And don’t go chasing after her”! “Fine, fine, I’ll stay right here, I promise”! He growled while making a mental note that he never promised Amelia he wouldn’t have someone else keep tabs on her..
“YOU DID WHAT”???.
Tracy had to suppress the grin that wanted to form on his face. “Tess is taking the news better than I expected!” he chuckled under his breath. Already he felt like things were going to work out. After years of feeling useless and llike life had passed him by he finally did something for him. Something to make him feel good about who he knew he was. Something to make him feel like a man once again. And, there was nothing Tess, the Chief, Diet Smith, Sam or anyone else could do about it.In that moment, brief as it was, he finally felt like Dick Tracy.“I said I quit the force”!After a brief pause to make sure she heard him correctly the first time an astonished Tess blurted out; “Why would you quit your job”? Tracy knew Tess would be shocked by this surprising news. That was part of the problem, wasn’t it? It seemed everything he did lately was all a part of a routine; totally and completely predictable. Of course finding out he’d quit would surprise her since it was so out of the norm. He also knew that for far too long nothing he did surprised her. He also knew he did owe her an explanation.“I went to work this morning and spoke to the Chief. I explained how I’d been feeling lately, how I was being passed on all the good assignments and instead being giving bottom of the barrel jobs any raw rookie could do. I argued that all my years of on-the-job experience were being wasted on babysitting assignments. Tess, sensing this meeting did not turn out well walked over to her husband. “What did the chief say”? Tess saw a glimpse of the fire in Dick’s eyes that she’d not seen in ages. “He said he no longer had confidence in my ability to do the job and that he couldn’t take the chance I would get myself or someone else killed”. Tess was stunned. How could they say that to Dick after all his years of loyalty to the force? “Is that why you quit”? “No, I decided to quit when the Chief said he was assigning me to a desk job for everyone’s safety. I told him I’d rather go into private practice than be humiliated like that”! Tess , seeing that the anger in Dick’s eye’s was replaced by hurt and disgust determined then and there that she would do whatever it took to help him restore his dignity. .To Be Continued,,,,
Hey — what with Diet Smith’s newest project, maybe this is the beginning of a big time travel adventure for Tracy! Think of the mysteries he could solve! (Drop him in Dallas toward the end of 1963, for instance…)
Neat boat Tracy is piloting! One hand on the steering wheel and the other on the outboard tiller. (See there, Stilldamatt? I threw you a lifeline!) LOL!

Tracy really should say, “It’s I”. I know that “me” is acceptable unless you’re a purist, but we should expect only the very best from Dick.
