I cried when my son started first grade…this would be the first time he would spend all day in school. I felt at odds all that day. But he seemed to like it well enough… ;)
My dad insisted that my mom get a job when all us kids were in school; I do not know if it was to keep her busy or that he thought they would need the extra money to pay for school activities.
I had to drag my mom with me to the first day of sixth grade, and even middle school! She was a good sport about it, but once mumbled something about wanting to push me out of the nest.
I did not cry when my son went off to kindergarten. Of course, he had been with babysitters or in preschool from the age of 1 month, so it wasn’t anything new. (Before you all condemn me, I did NOT have a choice in the matter. I was not about to have the state support me when I am a trained accountant.)
Took my daughter to her first day of kindergarten. Second day she had to ride the bus. I looked up at the bus window and saw that little face staring down at me with big tears rolling down her cheeks. Broke my heart.

Five kids, never cried once when they went off to school. Felt a bit of nostalgia, for the child left behind though, as I did my joyful, happy dance.

Left my daughter of at pre-school and winced a little. Looked back and hers was the only dark hair in a sea of blonde.

The grandson, who’s living in my house, is starting this fall. Going to be a bit sad but happy he’s getting the opportunity also.

“Lizzie knows an awful lot about the first day of kindergarten…”.I was wondering the same thing.Maybe her big brother prepped her.

:) Ahhh memories! This strip captures that ‘happy-sad’ feeling perfectly.
